Our journey to flowers

About Us

Eight years ago, our daughter was born with a very rare congenital heart defect. We spent much of her first three years at our local Children's Hospital or living away from home at Boston Children's Hospital. Those years were very dark and it was the little, random acts of kindness that helped keep us going. When the pandemic hit, we started growing more flowers because the beauty of the outdoors was a balm for our anxiety, sadness, and isolation. We started giving our excess flowers to neighbors, people in our community that were struggling, and our local Children's Hospital. Our daughter would dress up in a flower fairy costume and then we would go deliver bouquets. Seeing the joy that the flowers (and our little fairy) brought just filled up our souls.

At some point in this journey over the last several years, the flowers firmly rooted themselves in our hearts and we realized that we wanted to bring more beauty and joy into people's lives through flowers and our dream of Fern Creek Florals sprouted. Since 2020, we have worked hard to cultivate our dream of a sustainable flower farm and floral design studio. We now regeneratively grow on 1/2 an acre and offer a range of floral services to help ensure that everyone has access to beautiful fresh, local, and sustainable, flowers. Our flowers are grown without the use of chemicals and pesticides, are dictated by the seasons, and include a wide variety of pollinator-friendly native plants. It is important to us that we care for the land and the flora and fauna that live here too. Likewise, our floral design studio services utilize eco-friendly mechanics without the use of floral foam. We believe that flowers are inherently healing and their gift helps to build community and kindness. We arrange and donate a portion of our flowers to UVA Children's Hospital and also encourage our clients to allow us to repurpose their event florals for the hospital, as well. By supporting our small family-run farm and design studio, you are helping support our vision of accessible, sustainable, and fresh flowers for everyone. Thank you!

Meet Our Family

Jen, Farmher

Jen began her love of growing and tending things when she was a child helping out in her Mom's garden. Gardening and spending time in the outdoors, she developed a deep love of nature and especially for the Appalachian Mountains where she grew up. She attended Virginia Tech and earned a Masters of Science. Upon completion of school, she worked for Legal Aid and led international cycling trips for several years. In 2012, she completed her teaching certification and then taught science for over a decade in the public school system. She received her Master's in Educational Technology from James Madison University in 2016, where she also served as an adjunct professor for two years. In 2017, she founded the non-profit, LilyPads Housing, which holistically supports families seeking care at UVA Children's Hospital. She is currently the President of LilyPads Housing and also sits of the Patient and Family Centered Care Steering Committee for UVA Hospital. In her farm-free time she enjoys cycling, running, hiking, fiber arts, and all things sourdough.
